Master in Social Work

The Master in Social Work (MSW) program at Campbellsville University - Carver School of Social Work and Counseling - provides a superior training context for professionals in the social work field and prepares them for service in working with diverse populations.

The MSW is a blended program - courses are delivered in a convenient format composed of both on-campus and online. The system allows professionals interested in advancing their career in the area of social work to attend graduate classes one night a week on campus and to complete their assignments online, while keeping up with other professional, social or familial commitments.

Benefits

The MSW degree provides graduates with both personal enrichment and professional growth. The skills and knowledge gained from the course curriculum empowers graduates to be among the best Christ-centered servant leaders in the social work field while making a substantial difference in their communities and society.

Carver School graduates are extremely passionate about improving people's lives, and they are wholeheartedly dedicated to a profession that requires a great deal of care and commitment to noble ideals. A master's degree in social work can lead to careers in case management, clinical assessment, program development/administration, mental health counseling, family intervention services and comprehensive healthcare. It can also provide the proper foundation for professionals who choose to earn a PhD degree.

Job Potential

MSW graduates remain in high demand, and the demand will continue to grow in the future. According to the 2008-2009 Occupational Outlook Handbook published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, social work employment is expected to increase by 22% in the next 10 years, which is a much faster pace than the average growth in employment across the board.

The versatility of an MSW degree, which can be applied to many fields of practice, is not only rewarding on a personal level, but it is also an ideal career security asset during shaky economic times and beyond.

Job growth is projected to be particularly strong for social workers in:

  • mental health and substance abuse (30% increase)
  • medical and public health (24% increase)
  • child, family and school social work (22% increase)
  • social work with aging populations (gerontology) and rural social work

Admissions

The social work program has established a set of solid admission criteria to ensure that students' personal values, ethics and goals are compatible with the social work profession and that students are rightfully admitted into the program.

Applications can be submitted at any time; however, the review process ends 30 days prior to the fall (September) and spring (March) trimester. Applications received after the 30-day cut-off date will be considered for the following trimester.

You can obtain a packet of application materials by submitting an information request form.

Before students receive official acceptance into the MSW program, a committee will review their file and assess all materials submitted. The MSW Program Committee consists of all MSW full-time faculty, including the Dean of the Carver School of Social Work and Counseling. After review, applicants will receive a letter from the Carver School stating the entrance status as either full, provisional or non-acceptance in the graduate program.
