Distance Learning Enables Charleston Southern University Graduates to Receive Key Promotions
Online education is filling a specific gap in the higher education world. As competition in the job market becomes increasingly intense, those seeking employment need the latest knowledge, skills and necessary degree(s) in order to stand out from the crowd. A recent Eduventures study entitled, Understanding the National Online Higher Education Market, reports that the amount of students earning their degrees entirely online has more than tripled in the last five years. At Charleston Southern University's Evening College, many students have taken part in this growth.
The Evening College at Charleston Southern University designs its courses to meet the needs of working professionals. The Bachelor of Management Arts (BMA) degree, a degree program within the Evening College, is offered online and makes use of both synchronous and asynchronous instruction. The online BMA program allows adult students to earn their business management degrees on a fast track and in as little as 20 months.
Distance learning has achieved much of its success because it meets a legitimate need for those working adults who desire to earn a degree while maintaining other work and familial commitments. Online instruction enables student to mold their educational needs around their pre-existing responsibilities. While the journey to degree completion can be challenging, online education gives many working professionals new starts in their careers or just much-needed advancements.
Dr. Stan Parker, dean of the Evening College at Charleston Southern, says he often receives emails from graduates notifying him of beneficiary promotions-both in title and salary. In fact, a recent graduate of the BMA program expressed in an email to the Evening College offices: "I am a graduate of the 'Class of 2007' and have already reaped the benefits of my B.M.A. With my degree in hand, I have now been promoted within the U.S. Postal Service to Manager in one of the largest Florida offices."
At CSU and the Evening College, distance learning provides busy adults who are seeking to change or advance their career access to accredited degree programs in both a convenient and affordable way. In other words, the BMA program and other online programs like it provide adult students with a new opportunity to learn. Students are no longer limited by bricks and mortar, a set geographic location, or a limited pool of on-campus faculty. "Distance education is a viable answer of access for these students," says Dr. Parker.
