
Associate of Applied Science degree in Criminal Justice - Homeland Security Emphasis
The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Criminal Justice - Homeland Security Emphasis - prepares students to become qualified professionals in the field of law enforcement, corrections, probation, private security, airports, border patrol, customs investigations, private businesses, emergency and safety management fields and other related areas. The program will also increase and complement the skills already attained by anybody working in a variety of positions in law enforcement and emergency management.
The online AAS degree in Criminal Justice - Homeland Security Emphasis - provides a strong foundation of coursework in theory, research, policy and practice. Currently, Hiwassee College offers a total of 66 semester hours of online coursework, most of which are designed for transfer, should the student wish to enter progressive degree programs at senior institutions.
Program Description
The AAS degree in Criminal Justice - Homeland Security Emphasis online program offers a solid foundation in the areas of criminal evidence, criminal law, legal procedures and criminology. Graduates will be familiar with the values and terminology of the field and therefore be able to communicate effectively. This online program can also help graduates secure employment in a respected field of choice and assist students who plan on continuing toward a bachelor's degree. The skills acquired through this degree will be greatly valued in a variety of corrections, probation, government and private security settings.
Planned online courses include:
General Education Core (33 semester hours) - online courses that are common to most college degree programs to include English, communication, math, computer information systems, geography, sociology, humanities, and religion.
Criminal Justice Core (27 semester hours) - online courses that are specific to the major to include introduction to homeland security, introduction to criminal justice, criminal law and procedure, criminal justice administration, community crisis management, disaster sociology, introduction to terrorism, criminology, and an internship.
Social Science Electives (6 semester hours) - online courses that permit students to study in other areas of interest.
