Kentucky State University Receives Boost in National Rankings
Climbing the Charts
The release of annual national ranking reports can be a tense, yet exciting time for colleges and universities across the nation. Ranking high on one of these influential lists can signify not only the distinguished quality of academics at an institution, but also the overall package that a particular college or university has to offer. For many potential college students, these academic reviews serve as a jumping off point to their higher education search. Therefore, Kentucky State University (KSU) had a lot to be excited about when it earned a spot in numerous Best College reviews.
In fact, KSU ranked 39th among Southern Colleges and Universities, according to the U.S. News and World Report's 2008 Best Colleges Edition. U.S. News divides institutions of higher education up into specific regions and evaluates each establishment on set criteria. When searching for the top school in academic quality, best value or reputable faculty, U.S. News looks to established points of evaluation, which include peer assessment, retention, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, graduation rate performance, and alumni giving rate.
The Princeton Review also included KSU in its ranked list of Best Schools in the Southeast. According to The Princeton Review's Web site, the purpose of the regionalized ranking systems is “to identify some of the colleges and universities that we feel stand out within each region.” Unlike U.S. News, The Princeton Review bases their ranking system on a survey taken by 120,000 students at 366 colleges and universities. The survey’s participants are asked questions from numerous categories, including faculty involvement, quality of campus food, community environment and admission standards.
Such distinguished rankings by these prominent publications offer due recognition of KSU’s accomplished history and ongoing commitment to academic excellence.
