Bachelor of Arts in Public Safety

(Pending program approval: fall 2010)

Public safety personnel play a critical role in society. They protect, prevent, and react to events that endanger life, property, and society. From local police, fire or emergency medical services to federal level security agencies, the frontline of public safety is critical to our country's safety.

Midway College offers a competitive Bachelor of Arts in Public Safety degree directed at educating those who choose this career path. Previously this degree was structured as Homeland Security, but the curriculum has been expanded to cover a broader scope of safety curriculum crossing public and private security issues. Students will study a number of organizations and how they cooperate in providing timely and efficient emergency services. Subjects will include community risk assessment, critical infrastructure protection, and a host of leadership and management courses designed to give the graduate an understanding of organizational communications and behavior, strategic planning and conflict resolution.

Corporate Security area of concentration

The Public Safety degree can be expanded by adding an emphasis in Corporate Security. This area of concentration will prepare the graduate for positions in public or private security and loss prevention. The emphasis will provide the graduate an understanding of identifying threats and taking proactive measures to protect assets. Course subjects will include security surveys, security planning, information and cyber security and disaster recovery.
