Students in Midway College Online Homeland Security Corporate Management and Assessment Program Speak Up

"I think Midway College is a great place to get an education." - Tom Denington

This superlative remark from student Tom Denington was sparked by his reflection on his experiences with online learning at Midway College (MDWC).  Denington, currently enrolled in the college's brand new Homeland Security Corporate Management and Assessment Program, is pursuing a degree that will make him qualified to work in a wide array of local, state and federal positions that deal with maintaining the safety of the American public.

In response to why he first became interested in the program, Denington states, "I have always felt a duty to serve in the United States military.  However, after 9/11/01, I felt an even greater duty, not only to serve in the military, but a duty to protect the United States at home.  I am a career military man and currently serve in the Kentucky National Guard; therefore, the Homeland Security program naturally interested me."

Upon graduation, students with a degree from Midway's Homeland Security Program will leave campus with a variety of skills that are essential not only for protecting our nation's borders, but also to ensure a productive and financially viable career path in the years ahead. In addition to studying the design, implementation and management of security programs, students will also analyze the areas of problem solving, critical thinking, self-analysis, communication and ethical decision-making.

Considering his future after graduation, Denington remarks, "I joined the military at 18; therefore, I can retire in 2008 at the age of 38.  However, given the current economy and having a young family, it is not feasible for me to truly retire.  Unless I choose to stay in the military beyond my 20 years, I must have a second career planned.  I decided that my military career, supported by a degree in Homeland Security, would make me fairly marketable in the civilian world, particularly given my age and being up against younger people entering the work force fresh out of college.  Ultimately, I hope to work for the Department of Homeland Security, either at the state or national level.  My dream job would be to work at the Pentagon."

Due to the ongoing efforts to guard United States citizens against terrorist attacks, the field of Homeland Security represents one of the fastest growing industries in the nation.  According to Judy Marcum, dean of Midway College Online, the biggest areas of growth are in the private sector. "The increased focus on making the private sector more proactive will make anti-terrorism initiatives even more effective. The same types of initiatives are taking place here to make our businesses, institutions and industries safer," she states. "A person in the homeland security position would need to be able to train all employees in anti-terrorism awareness. Risk management knowledge, good communication skills and proficiency on the computer are all important to the effective homeland security employee."

In addition, earning a degree online is now easier than ever at Midway College.  The Homeland Security Program is specifically designed to meet the ever-changing needs of non-traditional students who are trying to balance continuing their education with other elements of their daily lives. In order to be eligible for admission, the college only requires that an applicant be at least 23 years of age, obtain a minimum GPA of at least 2.50 and have completed between 40 and 60 credit hours of college coursework.

In the words of Tom Denington, "For someone who works full time and has a family, it has been a superb experience.  I believe Midway College to be a top-notch organization."
