Every year, more students are looking to online degree programs to complete their graduate studies. Lamar University in Texas will be adding its first doctoral program in education to its online offerings, according to KCEN television. The school's master's degree offerings have caused the school's online enrollment to quadruple since 2006.
The media outlet reports that online degrees offered through Lamar can allow students to achieve a higher education while still working full time or raising a family. For example, Kacy Bankston, a single mother and teacher in Dallas, was able to realize her dream of becoming a school principal thanks to a Lamar graduate program, according to the news source. The program is designed to be incredibly flexible to allow students to focus on one class at a time, if they need to.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, graduates with a doctorate in education will be qualified for positions such as school principal or academic dean in a post secondary institution. Employment in academic administration is expected to increase by 8 percent in the 2008-2018 decade.
