Missionaries Turn to Online Education for Greater Understanding

Christianity remains one of the most widely practiced religions in the world today.  Since its inception, Christianity, however, has experienced a proliferation of scholarly and spiritual interpretations, resulting in the creation of numerous denominations within the Christian faith.  As scriptures and religious texts come under different interpretations, new traditions and practices have been formed and, as a result, have become the foundation for many individuals' investigation into Christianity.  Students interested in understanding the diverging faiths within Christianity, including these branches' customs, histories and beliefs, should consider pursuing a degree in Christian studies.

Much like the faith in which it examines, Christian studies is a field attracting a large variety of scholars and potential students.  Individuals entering the discipline may be looking to learn more about a culture or attempting to find a greater understanding of their own faith through comparison to outside religious belief systems. However, one of the greatest populations of Christian studies students comes from those individuals concerned with spreading God's word and making a difference in people's lives.

Missionaries, one of the highest ascribing populations to the Christian studies field, are often commissioned to travel to foreign or developing countries in order to teach about Christianity and God's loving message.  In addition, many missionaries are also assigned volunteer positions, including such tasks as teaching English, building homes, provide medical aide, create disease awareness and supply clean water. While the responsibilities of a missionary are not limited to the above, individuals dedicated to God's will are, in many ways, committed to a more personal journey to find their own purpose.  Therefore, a degree in Christian studies offers missionaries a unique chance to thorough examine his or her faith.

While such a degree is not necessary for missionary work, students flock to the field of study in order to better prepare themselves for a journey doing God's will. While pursuing this degree, students gain a more in-depth knowledge of their denomination's practices, the history of Christianity and the development of missionary practices throughout time. Not to mention, a Christian studies degree enables missionaries to offer spiritual support to those individuals facing questions of faith.

What many missionaries do not realize is that they do not have to take a leave of absence from their work in order to earn their degree. With the advances of technology, many missionaries are turning to distance learning programs in order to earn their degree in Christian studies. Online education permits missionaries located in more remote locations to access the same high quality, educational resources as student closer to home.  Missionaries are able to communicate regularly with their professors about assignments or just to discuss a question of morals or spiritual growth.

Christian studies programs consist of a variety of religion classes that span a large range of topics, including Church history, spiritual context, scripture, and current events. Philosophy is another popular area of study for a Christian studies student. Religious philosophy provides students with a background to address difficult questions concerning their individual growth or study of faith.  In addition, Christian studies students complete a comprehensive load of liberal studies or humanities courses in order to gain a more well-rounded perspective on their education. These courses can include ethics, English composition, law, cultural studies, world religions and communications.
