CIFS is a vocational, post-secondary teaching institution with a primary purpose of educating individuals interested in becoming certified funeral directors. The mission of CIFS is to prepare students for entry-level positions in the funeral service profession.

A student may elect to complete programs via web-based instruction (online or eLearning). Courses taken through this option follow the same academic term and length, and have the same rigorous academic and admission requirements as those taken on-campus.

The online certificate in Funeral Directing teaches students how to provide and conduct funeral service for a variety of purposes, including ceremonies of religious, fraternal, military, traditional, humanistic or nontraditional nature. Graduates are educated in core areas of focus, such as the preparation needs (other than embalming) of a dead human body for burial and other means of final disposition. Associate of Applied Science in Funeral Directing

Commonwealth's Associate of Applied Science in Funeral Directing program is offered partially online and is designed to teach students the skills and abilities essential for employment as an embalmer and funeral director. Students can obtain their degree in as little as 12-15 months. As a graduate of this program, you will possess the skills necessary to disinfect, preserve and/or restore a dead human body through embalming and restorative art for the purposes of burial or other means of final disposition.

Students will learn how to conduct funeral service ceremonies of various religious, fraternal, military, traditional, humanistic and nontraditional customs. Students will learn how to conduct funeral arrangement conferences with families, complete necessary paperwork in funeral home management and implement proper workplace safety guidelines for funeral service personnel. Graduates of this program may find entry-level employment as an apprentice/intern/provisional licensee with funeral homes, embalming services, cemeteries, pre-need sales and affiliate funeral service merchandise companies, and embalming chemical companies. Individuals seeking these credentials must also meet the requirements of the appropriate licensing agencies.
