Growth of Online Education

Distance Learning Continues to Expand

Whether you call it 'online education' or 'distance learning', it is exploding and growing in astronomical proportions. This is a growth that is recorded globally and it has gotten everyone's attention. The fact of the matter is distance education has expanded to fill a gap in higher education. Working professionals have latched on to the benefits of online learning. Companies have even supported the move, paying for employees to return to school and earn a secondary degree or further certification. Needless to say, the option to return to school is becoming increasingly popular and easy than ever.

When examining the factors, it is easy to see the popularity and growth of online education. For one, the number of households that have access to internet is well over half in the United States. With the growth of online education, the number of courses, degrees, instruction formats and program types is creating more opportunities for a variety of audiences. Adult students and working professionals can select a program that fits their specific educational and professional needs. Distance learning is offered on a global basis, making education accessible to a wider population of people from all walks of life.

Increased enrollment is a major reason why colleges have started to jump on the online education bandwagon. Distance learning is about more than just enrollment numbers. Colleges and universities find online learning allows them to be competitive and reach out to non-traditional students. In addition to online course requirements, some distance education programs require students to complete a certain number of credits through a traditional, on-campus format. However, these “blended” degree programs still offer a considerable amount of convenience. Several fields of study, including paramedics and humans services, require hands on experience. For these programs, online education allows students to maximize their time, by complete a significant number of courses online with little disruption to their professional or family commitments.

The growth of online education is not even one of a particular program or degree. It is soaring from those pursuing associate's degrees all the way to those seeking doctorate degrees. Economical advantages also play into the recent surge in distance education. There used to be a law that limited the number of students that were allowed to seek financial aid by means of an online college, but Congress lifted that rule and now anyone who qualifies can apply for financial aid.

Online education is making quite an impression on the business world, as well. More and more employees are obtaining their degrees through online education, allowing them to gain professional experience while earning their degree. Accredited, online degrees are establishing their place alongside traditional degrees in the job search. In fact, an online degree can highlight an individual's organizational and time management skills, ability to communicate effectively and knowledge of the last trends in the field. After all, employers are aware of the great growth in online education, too.
